The Dangers of Over-sharing

Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube are the largest social media sites on the Internet. In fact, if Facebook alone was a country – it would be the 3rd largest. Sharing good, bad, and trending news with our family and friends via these sites has become a part of our everyday lives. With over 750 million active users on Facebook alone, we should be leery of what we share on social media sites, and especially who we share it with. A recent article we found outlines the dangers of over-sharing and how it can affect your home security.

Alleged ‘Facebook burglar’ sent to Floyd County: A New Albany man accused of burglarizing the house of a Facebook “friend” was transported to the Floyd County Jail on Sunday after he pleaded guilty to burglaries in Louisville.

Shaun M. South, 32, appeared in Floyd County Circuit Court on Monday for an initial hearing. Judge J. Terrence Cody ordered he be held on $100,000 court-cash bond. South said he will “likely” hire a private attorney and said he will represent himself until he is able to hire one.

South allegedly broke into a house in the 400 block of Lucy Drive in New Albany on March 21, 2010, after Keri Pendleton posted on Facebook that she and her now-husband, Kurt, would be at a concert that night.

Pendleton said South grew up across the street from her and added her as a friend on Facebook about six months before burglarizing her house. Home video surveillance showed two men breaking into the home and stealing electronic equipment, including a television, video game consoles and computers.

Pendleton posted images of the suspects on Facebook, and another friend identified South as one of the burglars. South and 21-year-old Kyle Bieber were each charged in June 2010 with class B felony burglary and class D felony theft.

Social media sites are attractive because they allow us to stay connected with our family and friends. However, as this story illustrates, burglars are also using these sites to target their victims. Before posting that you’re going on vacation or going out for the night, consider waiting until you come back to tell everyone.
