Today, we stumbled across this great blog called Your Home Security Wireless. One of their recent articles offered residents in Cincinnati home security tips to help keep their home and family safe from a possible break-in. The article is part of the blog’s initiative to provide a wide-range of content, news, and reports for numerous residential areas across the country.

These were some of our favorite home security ideas:

Lights, lights, lights

By investing in a well-lit path, you can easily see the entrance to your front door and back door. A good lighting job outside your home and entrances, in addition to having trimmed shrubs that do not obstruct your view, discourage prowlers from targeting your home. Remember – a dark home is an invitation to burglars who don’t want to be seen.

Deliveries when not home

Burglars search for context clues to see if you are home. A big stack of papers, mail outside your door or in your mailbox is a clear give away. Nothing says “I’m not home” like a giant pile of newspapers, or a big package sitting in the driveway or front door. If you are expecting a delivery while you are traveling, ask a friend, family member or neighbor to handle it.

Moving to a new home? Change your locks!

Aside from the people that previously owned the house, there is no telling how many other people have a key to the previous owner’s locks. Remember, just because they owned the same house as you, doesn’t mean they share the same values. By changing locks, you can ensure you won’t have to find out the hard way.

Fake rock key-holder: bad idea

It is common knowledge that lot of people worry about forgetting their keys, or end up locking themselves out of their home. While that is hard to avoid at times, don’t let that open you up to a bigger home security threat. Most rock hiding containers are not that creatively disguised as you would think, and burglars know how to spot the fakes. If you hide a key, chances are they have a good idea where to find it.

Speed-dial important numbers

Important numbers such as the police, fire, school, poison control, and others are necessary numbers that need to be logged away for future use. Having a hospital or fire department on speed dial may save your life, and having the police there makes it that much easier in case of a break-in. While 9-1-1 is fast, pushing a single button and putting the phone on speaker may be all the time you have if a burglar gets into your home.
