Residents of Indian Head Park, a town in the suburbs of Chicago, are devastated after learning 14-year-old Kelli O’Laughlin was fatally stabbed in her home last Thursday. While funeral services are being held, police are working very hard to find her attacker.

Investigators believe the teen walked in on a burglary when she returned from school that afternoon. The town has seen over six burglaries in just the past month and the home showed signs of forced entry. She was found later in the home by her mother and rushed to a nearby hospital. Tragically she died as a result of the stabbing.

The police were able to draw a sketch of a person of interest based on a description from a witness. The sketch has been released and a $30,000 reward is being offered for information.

Indian Head Park has been on edge since Kelli’s death. White ribbons have been tied on trees and poles in the neighborhood in her memory. The freshman tennis star was a loved member of the community and her death has upset many parents and children. Events like these remind homeowners that their homes may not be as safe as they once thought. While it’s a scary reminder, it’s also important to take the time to improve your home security.

Here are some of our top safety tips:

  • Proper locks: Having good deadbolts and locks on all windows and doors is key. Don’t neglect your sliding glass doors either. Placing a piece of wood or metal in the track prevents them from being forced open. It’s also very important to lock all doors and windows before leaving your home, even if you’re only leaving for a short time. Burglars can be in and out of your home in just a few minutes.
  • Lighting: Bright lighting can make your home look occupied even if you’re not there. Light timers and sensor lighting can also be installed to achieve the same effect.
  • Shrubs and bushes: Keep your greenery trimmed to decrease hiding places. Not only can burglars hide behind them, but tall hedges also prevent neighbors from seeing any suspicious activity inside.
  • Neighbors: Your neighbors are reliable when it comes to protecting your home. They are familiar with your home and neighborhood and they will know if someone or something looks out of place. Many communities have neighborhood watch groups as well.
  • Security system: An alarm system is one of the best ways to protect your home and family. A wireless option is ideal because it provides the best protection at the best price. The security yard sign alone is enough to deter most burglars.

When the Indian Head Park burglary went wrong it was shocking for the O’Laughlin family. While you can’t always foresee what will happen, having protection in place is one of your best defenses.
