So, how does this new-fangled technology actually work?
LifeShield uses a combination of several technologies to keep your home, family, and valuables safe. Your base stays connected to LifeShield’s servers and monitoring center through a secure, encrypted proprietary protocol. Each component of your LifeShield security system communicates with each other using technology called DECT, which is similar to that used in cordless phones. Security sensors continually broadcast messages to the system’s control centers.
How is this different from other security systems?
Most other security systems are not connected to a service over broadband 100% of the time. In fact, they usually only connect to the alarm monitoring center when there is a triggered alarm event. Your LifeShield security system remains connected to LifeShield servers, which are connected to the monitoring center. When an alarm is triggered, LifeShield’s monitoring center is notified within milliseconds.
In addition to a constant connection with the monitoring center, LifeShield’s multiple control architecture offers built-in redundancy. With traditional alarm systems, if a burglar disables the main control panel the entire system will fail and no alarm will be reported. With LifeShield security systems, if a burglar disables any component, the system is able to use another controller to report an alarm event to the alarm monitoring center.
I’ve heard about Z-Wave technology. Is this what LifeShield uses?
No. Z-Wave has weaker transmitters, which limits the systems range. Z-Wave also uses a complex protocol to transmit data back and forth between system sensors and components, which uses up a lot of extra battery power.
LifeShield security systems use a simpler protocol, conserving energy and power while keeping communication clean and constant between your LifeShield security system components. Because the technology behind LifeShield has a more powerful protocol, system components and sensors can be placed at greater distances, increasing the system’s overall range and coverage. This means that you need fewer components to get greater coverage, saving you money while increasing your protection.
Could a comparable security system be built using Z-Wave?
Yes. However, the cost of creating such a system would be very high. Wall-powered battery backed-up z-wave modules would need to be purchased and configured to create a network comparable to that of the LifeShield security system. Even then, the sensor batteries would not last long due to the complex procedure of passing data back and forth between system components.
How long will the LifeShield system stay on with battery backup?
LifeShield security systems are designed to stay on for 24 hours with battery power. In the event of a power outage, the system switches controllers to help each device maintain enough power to last a full 24 hours.
